2. English Skills

Increasing one’s English proficiency is an important goal for many immigrants whose primary or native language is different. Even immigrants who are native English speakers may seek to enhance their understanding, speaking and writing ability in American English accents, vocabulary and idioms.

Amigos de Guadalupe
The organization (Amigos) addresses inequities through community organizing and advocacy, direct social service. and education (including Legal clinics, Family based petitions, Citizenship applications, ESL and Citizenship Classes Know Your Rights workshops, emergency family plans, after-school and summer programming for young children and youth), scholarships for new and continuing college students, Amigos has a partnership with Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, the heart of the relationships that make up the San Jose Mayfair community. Refugee Transitions is the only nonprofit agency in the San Francisco Bay Area that arranges English language and civics classes at community sites. We hire qualified teachers, assess students using the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), and develop our curriculum to meet the needs of the newcomer student population.  The new Women's Initiative is based on RT's innovative parent/tot class, which focuses on education for both mothers and their preschool-aged children.
