7/6/18 In 2018 the San Jose Office of Immigrant Affairs partnered with VietUnity and Sacred Heart to pilot two Civic Leaders Academies, one for the Latino (in Spanish) and another for the Vietnamese community. The programs were designed to encourage leadership and civic engagement in the ethnic communities.

Many programs have accessibility checkers that are built-in or easy to add after a simple internet search. For example, the Microsoft Office Suite includes a handy accessibility checker that makes it quick and easy to review a Word document for accessibility. While this automated checker doesn’t always catch every issue, it’s a great starting point. The checker offers tips for fixing issues and can teach you to avoid making the same mistakes again.

SEPARATION AND STIGMA: Transgender Youth & School Facilities

2017 Schools across the country have a legal obligation to
enforce policies that protect students from harassment
and discrimination”and that obligation includes
protecting transgender students from discrimination,
harassment, and violence. Unfortunately, too many
transgender students experience school to be a place
where they are unsafe and unsupported”a place where
they can’t even safely use the restroom. A school’s
responsibility and ability to keep all students safe is not
compromised by allowing a transgender student to use
the facilities consistent with their gender identity. When
schools deny transgender students access to these
facilities, they are inflicting profound harm on these
students, and making it impossible or unsafe for some
transgender students to attend school at all.

3/21 Report from the Public Policy Institute of CA (PPIC)- California has more immigrants than any other state.
California is home to almost 11 million immigrants”about a quarter of the foreign-born population nationwide. In 2019, the most current year of data, 27% of California’s population was foreign born, more than double the percentage in the rest of the country. Foreign-born residents represented at least one-third of the population in five California counties: Santa Clara (39%), San Mateo (35%), Los Angeles (34%), San Francisco (34%), and Alameda (33%). 2022 SF LANGUAGE ACCESSCOMPLIANCE SUMMARY REPORT

2/22 This year’s LAO report features direct feedback from community members via a comprehensive Language Access Community Survey conducted in 11 languages from June-September 2021 by OCEIA, in partnership with the IRC and the Language Access Network of San Francisco (LANSF). Survey results from over 2,000 City residents demonstrate that even with a clear commitment, a strong local language access law, and extraordinary efforts by emergency, public health and other City departments, not everyone was able to access the same information and services at the same time during a major public health crisis.

1/27/21 Older Adults Technology Services, Inc. (OATS), in partnership with the Humana Foundation, today released a new report that for the first time quantifies the size and degree of the digital isolation crisis among seniors in the United States, finding nearly 22 million older Americans continue to lack broadband access at home. Stressing the importance of digital health tools and social connectedness amid the coronavirus pandemic, OATS and The Humana Foundation are launching a new effort to close the technology adoption gap through Aging Connected – a national campaign to bring at least a million older Americans online with high-speed internet by 2022.

Solidarity in Isolation? Social Cohesion at a Time of Physical Distance

7/21 Report from Migration Policy – In addition to its widespread public-health and economic impacts, the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged social cohesion in many countries by forcing changes in how people interact. Physical connection, the most human response to collective adversity, has been largely out of reach during long periods of lockdown, social distancing, and remote work and learning. The temporary closure of public spaces such as libraries and schools has also limited the spontaneous, casual encounters that can build bridges between disparate groups.

My Undocumented Life

Our mission is to provide up-to-date information and resources to undocumented students, their families, and allies (including educators, counselors, and administrators). We post scholarship opportunities that are open to undocumented students, strategies for navigating the educational system while undocumented, information on how to apply for DACA, key upcoming immigration-related events, news on immigration policies, and much more. Stop AAPI Hate- Inside the California organization tracking anti-Asian hate incidents

6/7/21 Stop AAPI Hate has recorded nearly 7,000 hate incidents involving Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders nationwide
Volunteers review each report submitted by community members to the Stop AAPI Hate website; more than 2,800 came in during March alone. Women reported more than two thirds of all incidents in the coalition’s most recent national report. About 44% involved Chinese Americans.
While about 12% of survivors said they experienced some form of physical assault, more than two-thirds reported verbal harassment. Others reported civil rights violations, such as workplace discrimination, or online attacks.

La Mesa Verde (LMV)

Families join La Mesa Verde through our 11-month introductory garden course. La Mesa Verde provides the necessary supplies for an organic backyard garden to 50 new low income families a year, including two 4’x 8′ garden beds, organic soil and compost, drip irrigation, and organic seeds and seedlings. Families participate in monthly garden workshops taught by Master Gardeners and LMV members, which include both sustainable garden practices and critical analysis of the food system. By participating in La Mesa Verde, families develop gardening practices that increase overall health and well-being, and join a supportive, organized community.

CA extends new protections to immigrants under laws signed by Newsom

10/24/19 The legislation signed by Newsom also expands California’s college student loan program for so-called Dreamers, young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, to include students seeking graduate degrees at the University of CA and CA State University schools. Undergraduate Dreamers already are eligible for those loans and in-state tuition. The new laws take effect Jan. 1.
Amid an escalating feud with the Trump administration and its aggressive plans to deport immigrants, California also adopted a new law forbidding immigration agents from making civil arrests inside state courthouses.
Newsom also extended Medi-Cal coverage to adults in the U.S. illegally through the age of 25.

In 2019, the Santa Clara County Office of Immigrant Relations (OIR) worked with the CA History Center & Foundation to create a timeline of immigration history in the US.
Immigration history in the U.S. is saturated with movements and practices that expand the definition of democracy and to apply that “all are created equal” to a broader community. On the banner and within this booklet, various forms of community resistance can be seen through the celebration of heritage months, the rise of the United Farm Workers (UFW), marches to defend immigrant rights, the creation of the Santa Clara County Rapid Response Network (SCC RRN), and so much more. San Jose earned perfect score for LGBTQ equality, despite some shortcomings

12/13/19 For the fifth year in a row, the Human Rights Campaign gave San Jose a perfect score for equality in services, laws and protection for its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer residents.
The eighth annual Municipal Equality Index researched 49 criteria for local communities, including hot-button issues such as actions against conversion therapy and single-user gender-neutral bathroom accessibility, both of which San Jose earned points for because of state laws.
Eighty-eight out of 506 cities nationwide earned a perfect score ” the highest number in the index’s history – and the national city average jumped to a record high of 60 points. Neighboring Oakland and San Francisco also earned a perfect score.

New Data Highlight DACA Recipients’ Contributions to Families and Communities

9/5/19 marks two years since the Trump administration announced the end of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), creating chaos and confusion and upending the lives of hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants and their families.
On November 12, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether the Trump administration’s termination of the DACA program was lawful.

Intercultural Speakers Bureau from ING

ING’s ICSB examines the roots and inter-connectedness of various forms of bigotry, including Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia, that are directed against Muslims, Jews, Blacks, Latinx, Asians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Native Americans. Panels of speakers address the history and impact of knowledge creation under colonialism and slavery, old and neo-orientalism, xenophobia, and internalized bigotry. Panels will include group discussions and conclude with calls to action to counter prejudice and hate while building an inclusive society based on mutual understanding and solidarity.

Federal Court Stops USCIS Policy Harmful to Students and Exchange Visitors

5/7/19 A federal district court prevented USCIS from imposing a new policy that radically changed how the agency determines when a foreign student or exchange visitor is “unlawfully present” in the US. “Unlawful presence” is a legal term used to describe any time spent in the US after a foreign national’s period of authorized stay has ended. …under USCIS’ final policy memorandum, far more international students and employees (such as teachers in the US as exchange visitors) would be subject to 3- and 10-year bars on future admissibility.

Vietnamese Small Business Resource Center

In February, 2019, the Silicon Valley Small Business Development Center, opened a Vietnamese American Satellite, specifically to help Vietnamese entrepreneurs ” the first office in the U.S. dedicated to serving Vietnamese-speaking business owners.
