Detained, Deceived, and Deported: Experiences of Recently Deported Central American Families
May 18, 2016 Between February and May, 2016, the American Immigration Council interviewed eight individuals who were deported (or whose partners were deported) from the US after being detained in family detention facilities, during which time they came into contact with the CARA Pro Bono Project. These women (or in two of the cases, their partners) shared their experiences both describing what has happened to them and their children since returning to their country and recounting the detention and deportation process from the United States.

Archive – More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S.
Nov. 2015. A majority of the 1 million who left the U.S. for Mexico between 2009 and 2014 left of their own accord, according to the Mexican government’s ENADID survey data. The Mexican survey also showed that six in ten (61%) return migrants (those who reported they had been living in the U.S. five years earlier but as of 2014 were back in Mexico) cited family reunification as the main reason for their return. By comparison, 14% of Mexico’s return migrants said the reason for their return was deportation from the U.S.

This 2013 manual shares the lessons learned from the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS). Newcomers – the collective term for immigrants, refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and unaccompanied children – are in most ways like everyone else when disaster strikes a community. They need things like shelter and security, food and water, medical care, and an opportunity to quickly get back to earning a living. However, newcomers have unique issues during times of crisis. Some, if not addressed, can have disastrous results.

Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services (LIRS)
LIRS works with migrants and refugees and many partners in service to resettle refugees through a network of 28 local organizations in 26 states. 16 of those organizations also provide immigration legal services. Asylum seekers, survivors of torture and other migrants impacted by detention are served through 23 partners providing legal and social services including visitation ministry. In addition, we work directly with eight foster care programs at the state level to provide family reunification and foster care services for unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children.
