6/23/18 Teenagers get mixed messages about depression and anxiety, and it’s hurting them. Many Indian and Asian parents grew up in a society where mental illness was not considered a health issue needing treatment, like a broken arm or leg. It is considered a matter of self-will.
Traditional Asian values place importance on staying silent, saving face, suppressing emotions, obedience to authority, and academic excellence. Preserving the reputation of a family is prioritized over the needs of an individual, and presenting an image of perfection to the outside world is more important than resolving the issues or illness of a family member.
