Archive – A true national security threat – foreign language programs disappearing

2/20/19 In January, the Modern Language Association reported that colleges across the country have shut down a “stunning” 651 language programs over the past three years. This astounding news did not make headlines. It is a quiet crisis ” and a harbinger of peril for the next generation of U.S. leaders.
Nationwide, only 1 in 5 students from kindergarten through high school is taught a foreign language. Only 16 states require any world language learning at all in K-12 ” and usually this amounts to only two years in high school.

Immigration Policies, Deportation Threats Keep Kids Out of School, Report States

11/20/18 Authors of UNESCO’s new Global Education Monitoring report, Building Bridges, Not Walls studied how the way different countries implement education and immigration policies can either promote or learning environments for immigrant children, migrants or refugees.
Experts found that in the U.S., deportation fears are having an impact on school attendance, whether students are afraid of their own deportation or of a loved one’s.
The fear is exacerbated if schools allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to search the facilities or collect immigration information from students.
Seven percent of U.S. children are born to parents who don’t have legal immigration status.

10/19/18 Contrary to what’s reflected in the mainstream media, the Asian undocumented population is far from negligible. There are an estimated 1.7 million undocumented Asian-Americans living in the U.S., and they make up more than 15 percent of the total undocumented population, according to AAPI Data. Perhaps even more surprising is that within a 15-year period ? from 2000 to 2015 ? the group’s unauthorized population more than tripled, making Asian-Americans the fasting growing undocumented group in the country. Lawsuit Charges USCIS Move Against Foreign Students Is Illegal

11/9/18 A US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy memo could bar many international students from the US. A new lawsuit argues that is actually the goal of the government memo. USCIS has attempted to justify the new action against international students by citing a questionable DHS overstay report.
The new policy memo drastically reshapes the unlawful-presence policy for F, J, and M visa-holders. Now, instead of the unlawful-presence clock running on the date on which the individual is adjudicated as out-of-status, USCIS will backdate unlawful presence to the underlying facts that give rise to the individual being out-of-status.

Multi-faith Rally and Re-affirmation of Santa Clara County Values

8/20/17 In a display of unity against bigotry, leaders of numerous faiths, members of their congregations and others, joined public officials to express solidarity in the wake of the bloody rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The rally at Emmanuel Baptist Church San Jose drew about 300, including leaders Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, SCC Supervisor Dave Cortese, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and SJ Police Chief Eddie Garcia.. Father Jon Pedigo, one of the event organizers, said, The best thing we can do is show and promote a different vision of who we are as a community. Show them we appreciate and respect each other and embrace each other regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or immigration status.

4/23/17 Undocumented children as well as U.S. citizen children with undocumented relatives have experienced heightened anxieties for several years as a result of deportation policies begun under President George W. Bush and tightened ones under President Barack Obama.
But according to school officials, those anxieties have reached new heights since Donald Trump’s inauguration, with possible consequences on their ability to focus on school work, the willingness of parents to attend school events, or even to bring their children to school.

Students perform better at schools offering extra services on campus

6/7/17 Schools that offer dental care, mental health counseling, food assistance and other services have a significant and measurable positive impact on student achievement, according to research released this week by the Learning Policy Institute and the National Education Policy Center. Schools that collaborate with nonprofits and government agencies to provide extra on-campus services in many cases showed increases in attendance, graduation rates and academic achievement, especially in math and reading.

Mountain View Spanish Language Leadership Academy

Since 2017,  the City has hosted the Spanish Language Leadership Academy. Each session is led by staff from City departments and includes information on each department’s core service function, major activities, programs and project overview.
